International Women’s Day (IWD), originally called International Working Women’s Day, is marked on March 8 every year. In different regions the focus of the celebrations ranges from general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women’s economic, political and social achievements. Social awareness of the struggles of women worldwide are brought out and examined in a hopeful manner. TSSS commemorated the International Women’s Day in collaboration with the District administration and the MATHI, the programme of the government for women empowerment.

Fr.Joseph Johnson, Executive Director of TSSS, Mr.Samayamoorthi, I.A.S, the District Collector, Ms.Uma Maheswari, D.R.O, Ms.Vigila, Sathiyananth, Mayor of Tirunelveli Corporation, Mr.Mathavan, Chairman took active part in the celebrations. They too participated in the human chain and rally. They visited and appreciated the exhibitions organized by the SHGs which displayed their handicrafts and other products for sale. They also attended the public meeting organized by TSSS.

World Water day (March 22)

World Water day was celebrated on 22nd of March every year. Our federation members celebrated the event by taking more actions to save water. A special Vehicle procession was organized in Manur union to give awareness on world water day. Six vehicles with 80 members made a procession to 16 villages through a campaign.

Mr. Natargan, D.SP, Sankar, B.Do, Fr.S.Joseph Johnson, Director and other federation leaders also participated in the campaign.

In papanasam the federation members and the members of Tamirabharani protection movement gathered and cleaned the river Tamirabarani. The municipal chairman E.Manonmani, Mr. Muthusankarlingam D.SP, and other volunteers participated in the activity. Awareness seminar was held in 7 places. The members of women and farmers associations participated in the programme.

Thamirabharani River protection movement

The Farmers Associations were instrumental to the formation of Tamirabarani River Protection Movement. Their cooperation and collaboration with other like-minded NGOs and Civil society organizations have popularized the movement and they remain very active and alive. The revival of the River Tamirabarani by removal of weeds took place in different areas. The district administration too supported these initiatives. At Vikramasingapuram, Mr.Muthu, the D.S.P, inaugurated the programme on 22nd March 2013.

The Vice-President of the Movement and the Executive Director of TSSS, Fr.Joseph Johnson inaugurated similar programme at Senthimangalam in February 2013. Removal of weeds (AMALA SEDI) was carried out by the people at Mukkoodal too.
